What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is part of the natural aging process of the lens in the eye. Normally after the age of 40, everyone begins to lose the ability to accommodate or focus on near objects or to read fine print. This is a universal phenomenon and not caused by any illness or disease. When the inability to focus is lost, it means that the eye cannot adjust or focus images at different distances. The most common method for correcting presbyopia is with magnifying, or reading glasses for those who aren’t already wearing glasses. Bifocal lenses are usually used in patients that require glasses for distance needs as well.
